The evolution of horror
Today's world of horror has seemed to have taken a strange turn. The same ideas are repeated over and over to no avail while the great villains of the past seem to get further and further away. The special effects and sparkles are getting better with the advancement of technology, but are directors/writers trying to replace good story telling and writing with these effects?
A few good examples, in my opinion, of solid modern horror is "The Conjuring", "Sinister", and "Babadook". All of these movies take a relatively new approach and new story and mix it with all the classical things people seem to still love like the monster in the dark and the random jump scare. Babadook deserves praise in-particular because it dares to create a whole new monster in the dark. I don't recall a memorable character creation since the days of Freddy, Jason, and our ole' pal Chucky.
A good place to look for a new twist is horror festivals. There is a new movie out right now called "The Witch" that has been praised by many people, including the master of horror himself, Stephen King. I think I'm going to go check that movie out.
